The building, a 45-floor high-rise located on the Northwestern University Campus, was designed with future expansion in mind. This re-adaptive expansion allows real estate functions like hotels and parking to be upgraded to meet various hospital needs without financial loss. The structure features 11 elevators serving all building needs and focuses on the Ability Lab technology developed for the RIC hospital, aimed at rehabilitating severely disabled individuals.

The design includes transfer slabs in mechanical floors, allowing for differential column arrangements. Floor plans maximize natural light penetration from the east and west facades. The ability lab, situated on the east side, offers views of the lake and morning sunshine. Evidence-based design principles emphasize staff well-being, patient healing, and security.

Patient rooms are designed with inboard bathrooms for enhanced exterior views and quick physician access. Nurses can engage closely with families by positioning patient left sides near family zones. The patient head wall unit supports expansion, and foot units provide central access to building services. Clinical zones feature hand-washing units for patient-doctor connections, with clinical materials stored out of patient view. Room colors are cool and natural, using maple wood and green tones, and furniture design facilitates easy cleaning and reduced horizontal surfaces.
